What type of repertoire does Belle Voci sing?
Concerts are thematically programmed and our artistic director makes a concerted effort to present concerts that are diverse and pleasing to the ear. In the past we primarily performed music from the classical women’s choir repertoire. But over the last few seasons we have branched out more into Celtic music, Gospel, Eastern European folk songs, Jazz and music from West Africa.
How large is the group?
The ensemble ranges from 20-24 singers and we sing from 2-10 parts.
Where/when does the choir rehearse?
Belle Voci rehearses at First Presbyterian Church (1200 SW Alder Street) in downtown Portland. Our rehearsals are on Monday nights from 7-9:30pm. Rehearsals usually begin in mid-August or mid-September, depending on the date of our first concert of the season.
How many concerts does Belle Voci perform in a season?
The ensemble generally performs three concerts a season. We also look for opportunities to perform outreach concerts and take part in unique collaborations. In the past we have enjoyed collaborations with the Pangur Ban Caeli Band, Mike Horsfall from Tall Jazz, Members of the Portland Baroque Orchestra and Gospel artists Dee and Derrick McDuffy.
Where does Belle Voci perform?
Most of our concerts take place in or around downtown Portland. In our efforts to build a wider audience we have also performed in Beaverton, Camas and Salem and hope to find more opportunities to perform outside the Portland area.
Are there fees/dues?
Members of Belle Voci pay a $50 membership fee for the season and there is also the cost of our retreat (in Sept/Oct) which is generally $60-$70. We also have a performing dress which costs between $60-$70 (not including tax and shipping).
When does Belle Voci hold auditions?
Auditions may occur throughout the year at the artistic director’s discretion, but they are primarily held in mid-May (or early August if needed)
What is the audition process?
The audition will consist of vocalizing, sight reading, singing a prepared excerpt provided by the artistic director, Tonal Memory, and brief interview. Each audition takes about 30 minutes.
